Sixteen years since the arrest and imprisonment of Abdullah Ocalan, leader of Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK), an international campaign called “Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan” has announced it has a petition with over 10 million signatures calling for the man’s release.
Ocalan supporters demonstrated in southeastern Turkey on Saturday to commemorate the 16th anniversary of his capture.
The “Freedoom for Ocalan” campaign was launched on September 6, 2012 at a press conference in Belgium’s capital, Brussels.
Reimar Heider of International Initiative’s “Freedom for Abdullah Ocalan-Peace in Kurdistan” project announced that more than 10 million have signed a petition to free the PKK leader and find a democratic solution to Turkey’s Kurdish issue.
Speaking to NRT, Dr. Faeq Golpy, a political analyst, said “the plan to arrest Ocalan was Turkey’s wish, and arresting him did not stop his supporters’ dream.”
“We aim for 2015 to be the year of liberating Ocalan,” he added.
Also known as “Apo” (short for Abdullah and “uncle” in Kurdish), Ocalan is one of the founding members of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
Ocalan was arrested in 1999 in Nairobi and taken to Turkey, where he was sentenced to death. The sentence was commuted to life imprisonment and he remains the only inmate at a facility on Imrali Island in the sea of Marmara.
Analysis of the 30 September 2013 BBC Panorama documentary 'Saving Syria's Children' and related BBC News reports, contending that sequences filmed by BBC personnel and others at Atareb Hospital, Aleppo on 26 August 2013 purporting to show the aftermath of an incendiary bomb attack on a nearby school are largely, if not entirely, staged.
